Two More Men Arrested After Pickaxe Handle Murder in Ilford

Police have arrested two more suspects in the brutal murder of Sandel Serbu, who was bludgeoned to death with pickaxe handles in Ilford. The 36-year-old Romanian national tragically died after a savage attack on the early hours of Sunday, 12 November.

Fatal Beating on Ilford High Road

Sandel Serbu was rushed to hospital with severe head injuries after a fight broke out near the junction of High Road and Connaught Road, Ilford, at 2:48am. Despite emergency treatment, he later died. A post-mortem at East Ham Mortuary confirmed blunt force trauma to the head as the cause of death.

New Arrests as Police Hunt Witnesses

On Monday 20 November, two men aged 43 and 27 were arrested on suspicion of murder. The 43-year-old has since been released under investigation, but the 27-year-old remains in custody at an east London police station.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Considine, leading the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said:

“We know those responsible arrived in two cars. The victim was attacked as he exited a vehicle he was a passenger in.”

DCI Considine added:

“There were multiple witnesses—both pedestrians and drivers. I urge anyone who saw the attack or captured footage to come forward. Your evidence could be key to catching the killers.”
