Hero Cops Save High-Risk Suspect from Deadly A12 Plunge

PC Kyle Simmons and PC Eugene Robinson of the Brentwood Local Policing Team were on routine patrol when a stolen car alert popped up for the A12. The vehicle had been reported stolen in a Romford robbery.

Arriving near the roundabout above Junction 12, the officers found a man rifling through the car’s boot. PC Simmons moved in, but the suspect suddenly bolted towards the A12 bridge—and shockingly jumped over the barrier.

Desperate Escape Attempt Foiled

PC Robinson gave chase and grabbed the man by the waistband mid-leap, struggling as the suspect tried to hurl himself onto the road below.

Thanks to the quick teamwork of PC Simmons, PC Robinson, and a nearby member of the public, the man was hauled back to safety—and promptly arrested.

High-Risk Fugitive’s Close Call

The arrested man turned out to be a high-risk individual wanted across London. PC Simmons recalled the eerie calmness of the suspect:

“We found the car parked at the side of the road. The gentleman was surprisingly calm given he was a suspect in a high-risk case. As we approached, he suddenly made a bolt for the barrier.”

“We were just clinging to him. He was trying to push off the fence and fall, but we kept him in check. I told him, ‘If you fall, you will die,’ and he said, ‘Yeah, I know.'”

PC Robinson said, “It all happened so quickly. I thought he was going to make a break for it, but he went right over the barrier. There was no time to think, only grab and hold.”

PC Simmons added, “It’s nice to be recognised because, looking back at the footage, I didn’t think my performance was anything special. It’s fantastic to hear colleagues and the Chief say, ‘fantastic job.'”

Bravery Honoured by Chief Constable

Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington awarded the officers commendations for their “quick-thinking, bravery, and professionalism” at a ceremony held at police headquarters.

“This was an extremely dangerous situation that could have had a tragic ending if it hadn’t been for PC Simmons and PC Robinson’s swift and decisive actions,” said CC Harrington.

“They put their own lives in danger to save the man’s life, despite his determination to flee. Both officers should be extremely proud of what they did. This was outstanding policing.”
