As road surface temperatures in Southend are forecast to drop to a chilling -3.9°C, Southend City Council has deployed its fleet of gritting lorries to keep the roads safe for drivers.
The council’s three gritting lorries—each with a playful name—have been loaded with salt from the Short Street depot salt dome and are now treating the priority road network across the city. The fleet includes:
• Thaw Enforcement
• Brad Grit
• Grit Me Baby One More Time
With colder weather expected to continue over the weekend, Southend’s gritting team is on standby to ensure key routes remain safe and ice-free.
A spokesperson for Southend City Council said:
“Our gritting team is working hard to treat the roads during these freezing temperatures. We urge drivers to take extra care while travelling , as untreated areas can still be slippery.”
Residents can expect to see the gritting lorries out and about as the city prepares for icy conditions. For updates on road safety and travel advice, check the Southend City Council’s website and social media channels.
