Major Terminal Expansion and New Routes
The cash injection will fund a major expansion of Stansted’s terminal, increasing capacity by a third. New air routes to key business hubs and holiday hotspots are on the cards. Construction kicks off in 2025 and will take up to three years to complete.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Transport Secretary Louise Haigh hailed the investment as vital for economic growth. “We have been steadfast in our commitment to help British businesses grow and boost the UK’s economy,” said Haigh. “This announcement is a clear signal that Britain is open for business.”
State-of-the-Art Facilities and Green Initiatives
- The £600 million terminal extension is paired with £500 million to upgrade airport infrastructure.
- Improvements include a larger security hall, upgraded taxiways, and better gate rooms.
- An on-site 14.3-megawatt solar farm will meet rising energy needs.
- New electric vehicle charging stations will support greener travel.
Ken O’Toole, CEO of Manchester Airports Group which owns Stansted, said: “By investing more than £1 billion over the next five years, we will connect people and businesses to even more global destinations.”
