12-Year-Old Boy Wins Top Police Honour After Saving Mum from Deadly Crash
Miracle on the Motorway: Zac’s Heroic Drive
When Nicola Howells suddenly lost consciousness behind the wheel last December, her foot slammed down on the accelerator. But her 12-year-old son, Zac, didn’t panic. Thinking fast, he tried waking his mum before grabbing the steering wheel. Zac steered the speeding car onto a grassy verge, slowing it to a stop and preventing what could have been a fatal crash.
Once the car was still, Zac switched off the engine and calmly dialled 999. He gave emergency services the exact spot on the motorway, ensuring help arrived straight away. Both mum and son walked away unscathed thanks to Zac’s cool head.
Police Celebrate Zac’s Bravery with Chief Constable’s Commendation
Just a month later, Zac and Nicola visited West Mercia Police HQ in Worcestershire. They got a behind-the-scenes look, met the 999 call handler and officers who attended the scene, and even met some off-duty police dogs.
Chief Constable Richard Cooper personally handed Zac the Chief Constable’s Commendation, an award given only to those demonstrating extraordinary bravery.
“For a 12-year-old to react in such a calm and mature manner is magnificent,” said Chief Constable Cooper. “His bravery extinguished any danger to them both and other road users that day.”
Quick Thinker Saves the Day
- Zac’s split-second reaction stopped a potential motorway disaster.
