128 Rescued from Multiple Boats in Distress Off Calais Coast
A dramatic rescue mission unfolded off the coast of Calais on Saturday, October 12, 2024. The Gris-Nez Regional Operational Surveillance and Rescue Center (CROSS) sprung into action after three boats got into trouble at sea.
Swift State Response Saves Dozens
State resources raced to the scene. The state-chartered vessel Minck and the Boulogne-sur-Mer SNSM launch SNS077 rescued two boats carrying 62 and 10 people respectively. Meanwhile, the hydrographic vessel Laplace helped rescue occupants from the third stricken boat.
In total, 128 people were plucked to safety and brought ashore with no casualties.
Massive Multi-Vessel Rescue Effort
Over the course of the day, CROSS Gris-Nez coordinated nine separate operations using a fleet of specialist vessels, including:
- The hydrographic vessel Laplace
- Support and assistance vessel (BSAM) Garonne
- Intervention and rescue tug (RIAS) Abeille Normandie, chartered by the French Navy
- State-chartered vessels Minck and Ridens
- Coastal maritime surveillance vessel VCSM Esteron
Safe and Sound After Sea Ordeal
The rescue was part of ongoing regional efforts to monitor maritime emergencies in the busy Calais waters. Thankfully, no one was hurt during the chaotic incidents. All rescued passengers have been safely brought back to land.
