Burglar Sentenced for Targeting Vulnerable Pensioners
A burglar has been slammed with a hefty five-and-a-half-year jail term for preying on vulnerable pensioners in Stockton.
Andrew Hayward, 40, from Billingham, was convicted of breaking into two elderly victims’ homes earlier this year. His chilling crime spree took place between February and March.
Victims Suffered Trauma and Theft
- One victim, a woman in her 80s, was hit twice by Hayward.
- A man in his 70s, known to Hayward, was also targeted.
- Hayward cut phone wires to stop victims calling for help.
- He stole sentimental jewellery, devastating the victims.
Detective Slams ‘Horrendous and Unforgivable’ Crimes
“Andrew Hayward targeted the victims knowing they were vulnerable and I am pleased with the sentence that has been handed to him as he committed horrendous and unforgivable crimes,” said Detective Constable Jayne Bryan.
“During one incident he was violent and cut the phone wires, making it impossible for the victim to call for help. That must have been terrifying.
“He stole all of the victim’s sentimental jewellery, which is completely heart-breaking knowing it will never be recovered.
“These events were extremely traumatic for the victims. I hope this sentence brings some comfort to them and their families. Hayward will now pay for his crimes behind bars for a long time.”
