UK Wraps Up Largest Ever Sudan Evacuation After Airlifting 1,888 People
The UK has just completed its biggest and longest evacuation mission from Sudan, airlifting 1,888 people to safety. Tonight marks the final evacuation flight from Wadi Saeedna airfield as the focus shifts to helping Britons still stranded in the troubled nation.
Final Flight Leaves Amid Volatile Conditions
- The last UK evacuation flight departs this evening from Wadi Saeedna airfield, capping the largest Western evacuation effort from Sudan.
- Since operations kicked off on Tuesday, 21 flights have carried mostly British nationals and their families out of harm’s way.
- The UK government is staying committed to supporting British nationals who remain in Sudan or nearby countries despite ending flights.
Due to falling demand and ongoing instability on the ground, the government decided to stop flights tonight. However, consular support will continue for those still in Port Sudan and the wider region.
Foreign Secretary Pledges Continued Support and Diplomatic Push
“The UK has brought more than 1,888 people to safety from Sudan thanks to the efforts of staff and military working around the clock to deliver this evacuation – the largest of any Western country,” Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said.
“We continue to press all diplomatic levers to secure a long-term ceasefire and end the bloodshed in Sudan. Ultimately a stable transition to civilian rule is the best way to protect the security and prosperity of the Sudanese people.”
Government Urges Caution and Diplomatic Efforts Continue
Those still in Sudan wishing to leave are advised to follow official travel guidance closely. The UK’s top officials, including the Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary, Defence Secretary, and Minister for Africa, are actively engaging international partners to end the violence and restore civilian governance.
Ending the bloodshed and securing civilian rule remain priorities to safeguard the future of Sudan and its people.
