Kent Braced for Freezing Blast: Stay Safe This Winter!
Kent is gearing up for a chilly spell with a level two cold weather alert in place. The Met Office warns of a 60% chance of severe cold from Friday evening through to Monday afternoon. Snow may hit parts of the county, so residents are urged to prepare.
Who’s at Risk? Vulnerable Residents Need Extra Care
The biting cold poses a serious threat, especially to the elderly and those with long-term health issues. This season, the dangers are compounded as Covid-19 continues to circulate, putting vulnerable groups at added risk of severe symptoms.
“With severe winter weather, we appeal to residents to support the most vulnerable in their community,” said Clair Bell, KCC Cabinet Member for Public Health and Adult Social Care. “A helping hand from a family member, friend or neighbour—whether putting out bins or picking up prescriptions—can save lives.”
Top Tips to Stay Warm and Well
- Drink hot drinks regularly to keep warm.
- Wear multiple thin layers rather than one thick coat.
- Heat your home to a comfortable 18-21°C. Focus on the living room during the day, bathroom when needed, and bedroom before bed.
- Book your free flu jab if you’re over 65, pregnant, or have long-term health issues.
- Order repeat prescriptions early to avoid running out.
- Get heating and cooking appliances checked, and have chimneys swept recently.
“Cold exposure raises the risk of strokes and heart attacks—even brief periods can have lasting effects,” warned Allison Duggal, KCC’s Interim Director for Public Health. “We want to lighten the NHS load by encouraging everyone to stay safe and indoors where possible.”
Venturing Out? Be Prepared
