Ted Baker Shuts UK Stores: Over 500 Jobs at Risk
The iconic British brand Ted Baker is closing its final 31 UK stores this week, putting more than 500 jobs on the line. The shutdowns are set to finish by Tuesday, August 20, after No Ordinary Designer Label (NODL) — the company running Ted Baker’s UK retail — went into administration.
From 46 Stores to None: The Decline of Ted Baker UK
NODL entered administration in March 2024. By April, it had already shut 15 stores, costing 245 workers their jobs. Before this collapse, Ted Baker operated 46 UK stores and employed around 975 people. Beyond physical shops, Ted Baker held a strong presence online and via department store concessions.
Ownership Drama and Damaging Deals
Ted Baker’s intellectual property belongs to US firm Authentic Brands Group, which also owns Juicy Couture and Reebok. The downfall of NODL has been linked to “damage” caused during a troubled partnership with Dutch company AARC Group. Significant unpaid debts piled up during this alliance, worsening Ted Baker’s woes.
Frasers Group Talks Stall, Future Unclear
Sky News reports that talks between Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group and Authentic Brands Group about a potential deal for Ted Baker and Reebok have hit a dead end. However, insiders close to Authentic Brands deny any active negotiations are ongoing.
High Street Hit Hard as Ted Baker Vanishes
With the last stores closing this week, Ted Baker’s UK high street footprint will shrink to almost nothing. This marks a grim chapter for the retailer’s workforce and highlights the brutal challenges facing fashion brands amid ongoing economic turmoil.
