Hosepipe Ban Hits Kent and Sussex from August 12

South East Water has confirmed a temporary hosepipe ban starting at midnight on August 12. Around 2.2 million customers across Kent and Sussex will be hit by the restrictions.

Water Crisis Deepens Amid Record Dry Spell

Last year, South East Water lost a staggering 88.7 million litres of water daily due to leaking pipes. This summer, it becomes the second UK water company to impose a ban, following Southern Water’s move last week affecting nearly a million folks in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

The ban bans the use of hosepipes for watering gardens, washing cars, and filling private pools or ornamental ponds. Anyone caught ignoring the rules could face prosecution and a fine up to £1,000.

Water Companies Brace for More Restrictions

An internal briefing from South East Water warns other firms may soon follow. The blistering, dry weather shows no sign of letting up, with the Met Office reporting that July was the driest month in southern England since records began in 1836. Last month’s rain barely topped 5mm in many areas.

“We are in a very dry and warm period, and the forecast suggests this may last for weeks,” said Lee Dance, South East Water’s head of water resources.

“If voluntary reductions don’t protect supplies or the environment, we may impose further restrictions.”

Meanwhile, Thames Water has signalled a possible ban this summer if rainfall remains below average. Welsh Water and the Isle of Man have also declared or hinted at hosepipe bans.

Environment Agency Sounds Drought Alarm

The Environment Agency calls the current conditions “the first stage of a drought,” putting much of England on alert for water-saving measures. With almost all regions facing prolonged dry weather, hosepipe bans could become the norm this summer.
