60,000 Isle of Sheppey Residents Face Water Crisis Amid Sweltering Heat
As temperatures soar, around 60,000 people on the Isle of Sheppey have been left thirsty for a second consecutive day. A Southern Water main burst on Tuesday morning, triggering the chaos.
Second Pipe Burst Worsens Water Blackout
Just when locals hoped for relief, a second pipe burst overnight, delaying water restoration to 24,000 homes. This major disruption forced the closure of 12 schools across the island.
A Southern Water spokesperson said, “Repairs are complete, and we’re slowly starting to refill the network. If everything goes as planned, we hope to have you back in stock late this evening.”
Emergency Measures in Full Swing
- Six water tankers are supplying vital sites, including Sheppey Community Hospital.
- Kent Police are managing traffic to ensure smooth water delivery.
- A249 Sheppey Crossing northbound is closed for temporary pump installation.
- Water points have been set up, and priority homes are supposed to receive deliveries.
Residents Slam Water Company’s Response
Despite these efforts, locals say it’s not nearly enough. Laura Forsey blasted Southern Water: “They are not providing water to all priority homes. The water points are empty. We are desperate, but they’re dragging their feet.”
Lisa Peeke dubbed the whole mess “an absolute disgrace.” She said, “I’m on the priority list, but no water has been delivered. I only have three jugs left for a family of four.”
“It’s an appalling situation,” said Gordon Henderson, MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey. “I share the people of Sheppey’s frustrations and concerns.”
Keith Sentinella-Jones from Age UK Sheppey revealed the charity had to shut its day centres — crucial for many elderly locals. “That’s sometimes the only hot meal they get in a day,” he explained.
The water crisis continues to drag on with no clear end in sight as locals endure the heat with limited access to drinking water.
