UK Faces First Heat-Health Alert of 2024
The UK is on high alert as soaring temperatures blast the Midlands and southern regions later this week. The first Level 2 heat-health warning of the year kicks in from midnight on Thursday, June 16, lasting until midnight Saturday, June 18.
Regions on Red Alert: Who’s Affected?
The heatwave warning covers the East Midlands, East of England, London, South East, and South West. Experts warn temperatures could hit a scorching 30°C to 34°C, making this June’s heatwave an unusual and potentially dangerous event.
Experts Urge Caution Over Heat Risks
“High temperatures are expected in parts of the Midlands and south on Friday. We want everyone to enjoy the hot spell safely,” said Dr Agostinho Sousa, UKHSA’s Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection.
Vulnerable groups, including the elderly and people with heart or lung issues, should take extra care. Watch out for signs of heat exhaustion and follow simple health tips to stay safe.
Met Office Predicts Record-Breaking Heat
Dan Rudman, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Temperatures will rise well above average by Friday, with parts of southern UK likely to exceed 30°C, some reaching 34°C. This is the first hot spell of the year, and such highs in June are unusual.”
