BBC Dumps iPlayer Downloads for Laptops and Desktops – Fans Fuming
The BBC has sparked uproar by scrapping the ability to download shows on its iPlayer app for laptops and desktop users. The popular feature, beloved by viewers who rely on offline access, will soon be no more.
Why the Shutdown?
The BBC blames the decision on a “low number of people using it” and the “cost required to keep it going.” Despite this, loyal fans are left annoyed and inconvenienced, especially those who enjoyed watching offline when travelling or in areas with patchy internet.
Importantly, mobile and tablet users can still download programmes as usual, and streaming on PCs and Macs remains untouched—just no more downloads.
Phased Shutdown Dates
- February 2: No new downloads allowed on the iPlayer Downloads app.
- March 11: Web download option discontinued, but previously saved shows still viewable until April 8.
- April 8: Official shutdown of iPlayer Downloads app on laptops and desktops.
End of an Era for Offline Viewers
The April 8 closure marks the end for many who depended on the feature for offline viewing. With travel season approaching, frustrated users are now hunting for alternatives as the BBC shifts focus to cutting costs and streamlining its services.
