Three Brits are in the hot seat after a petrol bomb was hurled at the London HQ of Iran International, a broadcaster known for its relentless criticism of Tehran’s regime. The attack sparked a dramatic high-speed police chase through northwest London before the suspects were caught.
Blaze Foiled, Suspects Flee in SUV
The fiery attack unfolded just after 8.30pm on Wednesday. A lit container was thrown into the broadcaster’s premises but landed in a car park, where the flames quickly died out without causing injuries or major damage. Police on patrol spotted a black SUV speeding away seconds later, igniting a chase with Armed Response officers in hot pursuit. The chase ended abruptly when the SUV crashed at Ballards Lane and Woodberry Gardens, N12.
Watford Men and Teenagers Face Serious Charges
- Oisin McGuinness, 21, Watford resident
- Nathan Dunn, 19, Watford resident
- A 16-year-old boy from north London
All three have been charged with arson with intent to endanger life. McGuinness also faces dangerous driving charges. They are due in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 17 April.
Security Alert and Investigation Update
Neighbours around the broadcaster were evacuated as police ensured no further danger was present. Counter Terrorism Policing London leads the probe with support from North West Command officers—yet officials have stopped short of branding the attack as terrorism. Detectives stress this assault isn’t tied to other recent arson attempts in the area, such as the Finchley fire-bombing or last month’s Golders Green blaze. It appears to be a targeted strike against Volant Media, the parent company of Iran International.
Why Iran International? A Voice Tehran Wants Silenced
Volant Media’s station has long faced threats due to its fearless reporting on Iranian politics and human rights abuses. Despite security risks, Iran International remains in London, broadcasting in Persian and offering a critical platform unavailable inside Iran. Police have yet to reveal if the accused have links to the Iranian state or acted alone, leaving questions over motivation still unanswered.
