RNLI Crew Braved Four Dramatic Brighton Water Rescues in One Night

Christopher Townley, a rookie RNLI crew member, faced his baptism of fire during his very first deployment in Brighton. Starting at 4:10pm, Christopher and his team responded to a frantic call about a woman in distress near West Pier.

The crew quickly and safely guided the woman to shore, handing her over to waiting emergency services.

Search Fails to Find Man in Water

Just over two hours later, at 6:39pm, another call came in reporting a man struggling between Palace Pier and Hove Lawns. The team launched a thorough shoreline search but, frustratingly, no sign of him was found.

Inflatable Drama and Final Late-Night Rescue

The night wasn’t over. At 9:20pm, two men in trouble west of the Marina had got into trouble in an inflatable dinghy and were forced to swim for shore. The crew swiftly reunited the pair with their friends on the beach.

Moments later, at 9:42pm, the crew rescued a man reported in the water near Brighton Centre, bringing him to safety before the night was through.

Rookie Crew Member Chris Talks First Night Action

Christopher Townley, a King’s College London law professor and new RNLI recruit, was involved in every single rescue. Reflecting on his first shift, he said:

“When the first emergency call came in, my training kicked in and I rushed to the station as fast as possible. Working alongside such a skilled team, each using their strengths, was incredible. The pace is relentless once the pager goes off. After the second call, I was barely back before it beeped again. I didn’t expect so many incidents in quick succession but that’s the reality of the RNLI — you have to always be ready.”

Team Praise and Safety Warnings from Crew Leaders

Ben Hylands, helm during the final two callouts, praised Chris and the team for their relentless professionalism over nearly eight hours. He highlighted the critical role of their search and rescue skills, especially when locating the two men over 200 metres offshore. Ben stressed the importance of dialling 999 immediately if someone is spotted in trouble in the water.

Mat Humphrey, helm for the first two rescues, warned that with schools breaking for summer and warmer weather on the way, incidents are likely to rise. He urged beachgoers to prioritise safety and always tell someone their plans before hitting the water.
