British Airways Flight Forced to U-Turn Over Europe After Chemical Leak Scare

A British Airways flight from London Gatwick to Mauritius was forced to turn back mid-air after declaring a full-blown emergency.

Flight BA2065, a Boeing 777-200ER, took off on time at 9pm but called it quits about 90 minutes later while cruising at 33,000 feet over Germany. The crew declared an emergency by squawking 7700 – the aviation signal for a serious problem – before making a dramatic U-turn over Austria.

Chemical Leak Sparks Panic on Board

The emergency was caused by a chemical leak detected in the cargo hold, causing the pilots to abort the long-haul journey. Fire trucks were put on high alert at London Gatwick, ready for any incident upon landing.

The plane touched down safely on runway 08R, escorted by three fire vehicles. After landing, BA2065 was sent to a remote parking area for urgent maintenance and safety checks.

Passengers Rebooked After Sudden Return

British Airways issued a statement saying: “The aircraft returned to London Gatwick as a precaution where it landed normally.” The airline booked passengers on a replacement flight departing just after midnight, at 12:55 am the next day.

BA assured flyers that passenger safety remains their top priority in the wake of the scare.
