British Mum and Son Killed in Devastating French Avalanche
Tragedy hit a French ski resort when an avalanche wiped out a British mother, 54, and her 22-year-old son. The deadly slide struck near the Mont-Joly chairlift in Saint-Gervais-les-Bains around 3:40 pm yesterday.
Off-Piste Adventure Turns Fatal
The pair were part of an eight-strong group skiing off-piste, including three relatives and an experienced independent ski instructor. The avalanche swept the group off their feet in an area about 7,545 feet high, sending snow hurtling nearly 400 metres down the slopes.
Local rescue crews launched a frantic mission, uncovering the mum and son buried under the snow. Sadly, both had died from their injuries.
Miracle Survival Amid the Snow
Amazingly, the qualified ski instructor, buried alongside them and wearing an avalanche beacon, emerged unharmed. His survival was the only bit of good news in a grim situation.
Mayor Mourns ‘Decimated Family’ as Investigation Begins
Mayor Jean-Marc Peillex expressed shock and sorrow, highlighting the unstable conditions at the time. “It rained, it snowed, it was warm,” he said. “There are enough marked paths to ski on. It’s terrible what happened. A family is decimated, and we are very sad in Saint-Gervais.”
Authorities have launched a full investigation to uncover what caused the fatal avalanche, with snowpack stability and weather conditions under close scrutiny.
