Captain Tom Moore Named Point of Light by PM Boris Johnson After £30 Million NHS Fundraiser
Captain Tom Moore, the WWII veteran who wowed the nation by raising £30million for the NHS through over 100 laps of his garden, has been honoured with a Point of Light award from Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

To mark Captain Tom’s 100th birthday, the PM sent a heartfelt letter recognising his monumental efforts. The newly minted Colonel Tom has racked up accolades, including becoming the first Honorary Colonel of the Army Foundation College in 1.
The celebrations also included a re-presentation of his long-lost Second World War Defence Medal and flypasts by Army Air Corps helicopters and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
“No-one epitomises a Point of Light more than you,” wrote Boris Johnson. “You have touched our hearts, lifted our spirits and enabled millions to show their support for the wonderful men and women of our unique NHS. Because of their extraordinary courage and dedication, our country will get through this difficult time, fulfilling your optimism that tomorrow will indeed be a better day.”
Point of Light Award Spotlights Community Heroes Nationwide
Captain Tom is among the first celebrated by the Points of Light scheme, which recognises everyday heroes making a difference. One such hero is 32-year-old Becky Wass from 1.
Becky created a clever postcard campaign enabling neighbours to safely help the vulnerable while social distancing. From doing essential shopping runs to posting mail or just checking in with a friendly call, her #viralkindness postcards have gone viral — spreading across the UK, Australia, and America.

“Becky’s wonderful initiative supports vulnerable neighbours all over the world,” said Johnson. “Whether it’s shopping drops or friendly phone calls, it reminds us that being isolated need not mean being alone.”
Becky said, “It’s an honour to have the #viralkindness campaign recognised. It’s been incredible to see extraordinary volunteers using the postcards globally to help their communities at this challenging time.”
