Child and Nine Adults Escape Fiery E-Bike Blaze in Woolwich
A family nightmare unfolded early on October 12 in Woolwich as a fire, sparked by a faulty e-bike battery, tore through a terraced house. By 6am, flames had engulfed the home on Sandy Hill Road, but quick-thinking occupants fled just in time.
Escape from the Inferno
- One child and seven adults managed to bolt before firefighters arrived.
- Two more were heroically rescued from the rear roof via ladder.
- Several victims rushed to hospital for smoke inhalation treatment.
Fire Devastates Home
The fire wreaked havoc, gutting much of the ground floor and staircase, with damage sneaking into the first floor of the two-storey property.
Dangerous E-Bike Batteries in the Spotlight
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed the blaze was accidental, blaming lithium battery failure in a converted e-bike. A spokesperson warned:
“This was a destructive fire that thankfully no one was seriously hurt by. The fire, which is believed to have originated from a converted e-bike, spread rapidly and is another example of the dangers these devices can pose, particularly in the home.”
With over 130 e-bike and e-scooter fires recorded in London alone this year, these gadgets are fast becoming a major fire hazard. The LFB urged everyone to use genuine chargers, never overcharge, and never leave devices unattended while charging.
Safety First: Avoid DIY Conversions
- Only use reputable batteries and chargers.
- Avoid homemade e-bike conversions.
- Charge devices away from escape routes.
The fire was brought under control just after 7:20am, but the warning bells are ringing loud and clear for e-bike owners across the capital.
