Coastguard rescue teams carried out a difficult operation to recover an injured person who was unable to move from the lower section of a breakwater on Saturday afternoon. The casualty was on the lower part of the west breakwater when they suffered an injury and became unable to make their own way to safety. They had already called 999 for an ambulance, but because of the difficult location it became clear that additional specialist assistance would be required. HM Coastguard was contacted and Shoreham and Littlehampton Coastguard Rescue Teams were tasked to the incident.
Casualty lifted over two-metre wall
Once at the scene, Coastguard personnel assessed the injured person before preparing and securing them for extraction. Rescuers then had to lift the casualty more than two metres up the breakwater wall to reach a location where they could be transferred safely. After being successfully recovered, the casualty was handed into the care of the ambulance service and taken to hospital. The nature of their injuries and their condition have not been disclosed. Coastguard teams have reminded people that anyone facing an emergency at the coast should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
