Norovirus Outbreak Sparks Crisis at St Richard’s Hospital
A norovirus outbreak has forced St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, Sussex, to declare a critical incident. Nearly 30 beds are closed, and visiting hours have been slashed as wards struggle to cope.
Chief Exec Sounds Alarm
George Findlay, chief executive of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, called the situation “serious.” With few options left, the trust declared a critical incident, which will stay in effect for at least 24 hours. “We must manage bed availability for those most in need,” he said.
Strict Visiting Rules Now in Place
Visiting restrictions are tight. Only close relatives of newborns, children, or those receiving end-of-life care can visit. All others are urged to stay away unless absolutely necessary. Visitors are advised to phone the ward before arriving.
Ambulances Rerouted, Public Urged to Stay Calm
Ambulances may be diverted to nearby hospitals to ease the strain. Dr Findlay pleaded with the public to seek medical help only in genuine emergencies. “We need everyone’s support to help our staff get through this crisis,” he added.
The trust assures that robust measures are underway to tackle the outbreak and restore normal services as quickly as possible.
