BBC Radio 1’s New Daytime Duo: Dean McCullough & Vicky Hawkesworth Take Over
Big Move from London to Salford
Dean McCullough and Vicky Hawkesworth are set to front a fresh daytime show on BBC Radio 1 from Monday to Thursday, 1pm to 3.30pm. Their debut broadcast kicks off on Monday 5 September 2022. In a landmark shift under the BBC’s Across The UK plan, this will be the first weekday show to ditch London and broadcast live from Salford.
Following in Big Footsteps
The pair are stepping in for popular hosts Scott Mills and Chris Stark, who left the station on July 1st. Dean and Vicky aren’t strangers to Radio 1 fans—the duo first got their shot during the 2020 Christmas Takeover, a scheme by Head of Radio 1, Aled Haydn Jones, that offers rising stars a prime platform on the nation’s biggest youth station.
Meet the New Faces of Radio 1 Daytime
- Dean McCullough: Joined Radio 1 full-time in September 2021 hosting weekend mornings. Known for his vibrant style, Dean has chatting with big names like Anne-Marie, Aitch, and Tom Grennan.
- Vicky Hawkesworth: Hailing from Bolton, Vicky hosts shows on BBC Radio Manchester and GAYDIO. She’s also filled in across Radio 1 and recently hosted Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2022 and the Platinum Jubilee Concert.

“I literally don’t know what to say, this is wild,” says Dean. “It’s a dream come true to launch a brand new daytime show with such a talented team. Vicky and I clicked instantly during the Christmas 2020 presenter search. I absolutely adore Scott and Chris—they’re the best ever. But I hope their fans will join us for this exciting new chapter. I’m overjoyed and thankful Radio 1 believes in me.”
Vicky adds, “I can’t wait to get started. I’m about to live my dream. Following Scott and Chris, who kept me smiling for years, is an incredible honour.”
