Hundreds Stranded for 5 Hours in Freezing M2 Chaos

Motorists faced a nightmare on Kent’s M2 after being trapped for more than five hours in sub-zero temperatures. A serious crash involving an HGV and a pedestrian at around 8pm on Wednesday night sparked the massive gridlock between Junctions 5 (Sittingbourne) and 6 (Faversham).

Police and Highways Launch Bold Rescue Operation

In a dramatic overnight effort, Kent Police and National Highways worked together to free hundreds of drivers stuck since the evening. At around 1am, the trapped motorists were escorted to drive the wrong way along the eastbound carriageway—carefully reversed to safety while the crash investigation continued.

“We understand how difficult this has been for those affected, and we thank everyone for their patience while we worked to release vehicles from the scene safely,” said a National Highways spokesperson.

Despite the rescue, the eastbound M2 stay shut between J5 and J6 and is unlikely to reopen before the morning rush. Diversions remain in place with drivers urged to steer clear of the area.

Ongoing Inquiry and Dashcam Appeal

Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is probing the tragic crash that left a pedestrian dead. They’ve called on drivers caught up in the chaos to share any dashcam footage that could shed light on what happened.

“Our investigation into this tragic event is ongoing. We urge anyone with dashcam footage or information that may assist to contact us immediately,” said a Kent Police spokesperson.

Frustrated Drivers Speak Out Amid Apologies

After hours stranded in freezing conditions, drivers say relief is mixed with frustration over the long wait and poor communication.

“The situation was tough. It was freezing, and there was little info about what was happening. We’re just glad to be moving again,” one driver said.

Authorities apologised for the disruption but stressed the importance of a thorough investigation. Updates on the M2 reopening are expected later today.
