DVLA Rolls Out Online Photo Renewal and First Provisional Licence Applications

The DVLA has just made life easier for UK drivers. From 9 April 2024, you can now renew the photo on your driving licence and apply for your first provisional licence online — all through the Driver and Vehicles Account service.

Popular Services Go Digital

These two transactions are among the most requested by drivers. The latest updates come as the Driver and Vehicles Account service continues to grow rapidly, with over 890,000 users signed up since its launch less than a year ago.

Existing features include text or email vehicle tax reminders instead of paper mail – a handy option for today’s motorists.

New Features Put Drivers in Control

  • Renew photocard driving licences for 10 years online.
  • Upload your own photo or let DVLA use your existing passport photo via a secure link to the HM Passport Office.
  • Track your application and view details of your new licence once issued.
  • First-time provisional drivers can view their licence and add a vehicle registered in their name.

These upgrades form part of DVLA’s wider digital transformation, creating a slick, customer-focused service aimed at making online the go-to option.

Officials Praise Move Towards Digital Convenience

Guy Opperman, Minister for Roads and Local Transport, said:

“Renewing your driving licence should be an easy, accessible, straightforward process so that motorists can continue to drive safely. It’s great to see DVLA offering licence renewals and first provisional applications all in one place as it evolves into a dynamic, digital, and customer-centric organisation.”

Julie Lennard, DVLA Chief Executive, added:

“We’re pleased that two of our most popular services are now available through the Driver and Vehicles Account, giving even more convenience. We’re committed to making transactions simple and quick, with more features on the way so customers can get what they need from DVLA faster than ever.”
