Hero Cop Takes on Saw-Wielding Man in Daring Stand-Off
An off-duty Dorset Police officer has been nominated for a top National Police Bravery Award after tackling a dangerous man brandishing a live electric saw on a busy road.
Terrifying Encounter on Ferndown Road
PC Demar Rowe was heading to work on the morning of 9 August 2023 when he spotted an agitated man blocking Golf Links Road, Ferndown. The man tried to lie in front of traffic, causing chaos and danger.
Frustrated over a flat tyre, the man suddenly pulled a terrifying electric saw with a blade over a foot long. He swung it wildly, threatening PC Rowe and attempting to harm himself.
Quick Thinking Saves Lives
Without any protective gear or handcuffs, PC Rowe sprang into action. Spotting a decorating sheet in the man’s car, he used it to distract him before wrestling the live saw from his grasp. He then restrained the attacker with a bear hug, shouting he was an off-duty officer to alert bystanders.
Another off-duty officer arrived shortly after, but Rowe held the man down for a tense 20 minutes until police backup showed up.
Chief Constable Hails ‘Remarkable Bravery’
“Demar put himself in harm’s way to safeguard not only the individual involved but other members of the public. He is an inspiration and epitomises the very best of policing,” said Chief Constable Amanda Pearson.
The man was detained and taken to hospital for treatment. PC Rowe’s fearless bravery will be officially recognised at the National Police Bravery Awards 2025 this July.
