Peacehaven’s Beloved Meridian Centre Shuts After 45 Years
The Meridian Centre, a Peacehaven staple since 1979, closed its doors for good last Saturday. The final blow came when the Co-op, the last store in the centre, shut up shop at 5 pm — leaving locals grieving the loss of their town hub.
Morrisons to Rebuild, But Residents Face Two Years Without a Supermarket
For nearly 45 years, the Meridian Centre was the heart of Peacehaven’s shopping scene. Its closure now means the town is without a major supermarket, sparking concern and inconvenience among residents. But there’s a silver lining: Morrisons has snapped up the site and secured planning permission for a brand-new store.
Construction is set to kick off around Easter, but that leaves Peacehaven with no major grocery store for around two years.
Calls for Shuttle Bus as Locals Brace for the Shopping Void
With the supermarket gone and the new build still months away, locals want help getting to the nearest Morrisons in Seaford. Campaigns for a shuttle bus service are gaining traction, highlighting the community’s urgent need for grocery access during the gap.
Morrisons responded to concerns, saying:
“We understand the anticipation of Peacehaven residents for a new supermarket in the town. We aim to provide a detailed update on our plans soon. The project has been several years in the making, but we are committed to starting construction by this Easter. In the meantime, residents can use Morrisons.com for their grocery needs or visit our stores in Seaford or Brighton. We are also exploring the possibility of a temporary limited service and will update the community as soon as we can.”
End of an Era, But a Fresh Start on the Horizon
The Meridian Centre’s closure marks the end of a chapter for Peacehaven, but Morrisons’ forthcoming supermarket promises a fresh start. Meanwhile, residents hold onto fond memories as they navigate this retail shake-up.
