Environment Agency Greenlights Sizewell C Nuclear Plant in Suffolk

The Environment Agency has handed down three crucial environmental permits to NNB Generation Company for the new Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk. These permits clear the way for the plant’s operation with strict environmental safeguards.

What the Permits Cover

  • Disposal and discharge of radioactive waste
  • Operation of diesel generator standby power systems
  • Discharge of cooled seawater and treated effluents into the Greater Sizewell Bay in the North Sea

NNB Generation Company applied for these permits back in May 2020. The Environment Agency then held public consultations from July to October 2020, followed by further consultations on draft permits from July to September 2022.

Setting the Bar for Environmental Safety

Each permit outlines strict limits and conditions to ensure the power station meets high environmental standards during commissioning, operation, and eventual decommissioning. More permits will be needed for site investigations, construction, and associated facilities like workers’ accommodation.

Official Statement: Environment Agency Responds

Simon Barlow, Sizewell C Project Manager at the Environment Agency, said: “Today’s permit approvals come after a decade of detailed discussions, three years of technical assessments, and two rounds of public consultation. We carefully weighed input from local communities, national bodies, and statutory consultees.”

“We thank everyone for their evidence and participation in consultations. Our engagement with the local community will continue as construction progresses.”

“Publishing these decisions well before Sizewell C becomes operational allows us to influence the design, procurement, and commissioning to ensure people and the environment are protected.”
