Final Rideout for Rob Earns Royal Nod in True D-Day Style

Road Safety Sergeant Rob Heard took his final spin as a Hampshire officer in grand style, riding alongside Royals and VIPs at the 75th D-Day Commemoration in Southsea. Sgt Heard led The Queen in a special escort, marking a fitting end to his long police career.

Leading the Royal Escort at D-Day 75

On 5 June, Sgt Heard commanded the Special Escort Group as part of the huge D-Day 75th anniversary event in portsmouth/" title="Portsmouth" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Portsmouth. The event attracted global leaders like US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron to pay tribute to the brave souls who fought on Normandy’s beaches.

From ‘CHIPS’ Fan to Police Escort Ace

Starting his career back in 1989, Sgt Heard first served at Andover Police Station before fulfilling a childhood dream as a motorcyclist in Winchester traffic. Inspired by the American TV show ‘CHIPS’, he’s since guarded VIPs across the globe — including escorting former US President Bill Clinton during the 50th D-Day tribute.

His career highlights include policing the 2012 London Olympics and Olympic Torch relays around Hampshire and Thames Valley, earning him the Chief Constable’s Congratulations.

Championing Road Safety After Tragedy

Behind the pomp and ceremony, Sgt Heard tackled harsh realities as a road death investigation sergeant. In 2011, he probed a crash where an 89-year-old, blind in one eye, caused a fatal wrong-way collision on a dual carriageway.

This tragedy propelled him to create the nationally recognised Older Drivers Forum, offering vital safety advice to elderly drivers and concerned families alike.

Looking Ahead to Retirement

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my career in the Police, which has been varied and at times challenging. I am proud to have been part of such a dedicated and hardworking organisation,” said Sgt Heard. “It is an honour to pay tribute to those who gave everything to protect our country before I say goodbye to Hampshire Constabulary. “Taking part in the Portsmouth commemoration with veterans and special guests has been incredibly rewarding – a memory I will carry into retirement. “Making roads safer is my passion, and I plan to continue this work even after retiring. I’ve seen firsthand the devastating impact road collisions have on families, friends, and emergency crews. “We must all commit to safer road use to reduce these tragedies in the future.”
