Finnair Axes Flights to Asia and Russia Amid Turbulence
Finnair has announced sweeping cancellations of flights to major Asian and Russian cities from 28 February to 6 March. The embattled airline is bracing for looming regulatory changes set to shake up air travel routes.
Major Routes Grounded or Rerouted
- Cancelled flights: Seoul, Osaka, Tokyo, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Moscow, and St. Petersburg.
- Hong Kong flights already axed until the end of March.
- Flights to Bangkok, Phuket, Singapore, and Delhi continue but cleverly rerouted to dodge Russian airspace, adding about an hour to journey times.
- Stockholm Arlanda also joins Helsinki as a departure point for Bangkok and Phuket flights.
Passengers Given Options Amid Chaos
Finnair promises direct communication with affected passengers to rebook on alternative flights. If stuck, customers can snap up full refunds on unused tickets. Plus, a new refund policy allows cancellations without penalty for flights to South Korea, Japan, or China scheduled between 27 February and 13 March.
Full refunds are guaranteed for flights to China for now.
Russian Airspace Uncertainty Looms
The airline’s future use of Russian airspace beyond 6 March remains in limbo. Decisions will follow once regulatory guidelines clear up, leaving travellers to watch this space.
