Union Street Blaze: Man Leaps to Safety as Fire Destroys Workshop

A fiery inferno ripped through a workshop and storage unit on Union Street in Southwark on Saturday afternoon, forcing one person to jump from the first floor to escape. Another individual was rushed to hospital as flames tore through the building.

Massive Response from London Fire Brigade

  • Six fire engines and 40 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) scrambled to the scene after the fire broke out at 4.55pm.
  • The fire gutted the ground floor, with intense heat and smoke wrecking the first floor.
  • Three people escaped before firefighters arrived; one risked life by leaping from the upper floor to get away.
  • London Ambulance Service quickly transported a person injured in the blaze to hospital.
  • LFB received 21 emergency calls, dispatching crews from Dowgate, Dockhead, Whitechapel, and nearby stations.
  • The fire was brought under control by 5.48pm.

Cause Linked to Dangerous Lithium Batteries

The workshop, used for fixing and storing pedicabs, fell victim to a blaze investigators believe started due to the failure of multiple lithium batteries. Such batteries can trigger fierce fires or explosions when damaged or overheated.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned: “Lithium battery fires are extremely dangerous and difficult to control. People should move away quickly rather than trying to put them out.”

Rising Fire Risk From E-Bikes and E-Scooters

LFB is sounding the alarm over the growing fire dangers linked to personal electric vehicles like e-bikes, e-scooters, and pedicabs. They are among London’s fastest-growing fire threats, prompting the brigade’s ongoing #ChargeSafe campaign to raise awareness.

The LFB also cautioned against using second-hand or modified electric vehicles, urging consumers to buy only from reputable sellers. Many products sold online lack the strict safety standards of high street shops, increasing the risk of fires and malfunctions.

This blaze is a stark reminder to stay vigilant when using and charging lithium battery-powered vehicles. Safety should never be overlooked.
