Firefighters Set for First Nationwide Strike in Two Decades Over Pay
Firefighters are gearing up for a nationwide strike over pay, claiming their wages have effectively been slashed in recent years. This could mark the UK’s first fire service strike since 2003.
Massive Support for Strike as Pay Cuts Bite
The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) announced that 88% of its members backed strike action in a ballot that closed Monday, with a strong 73% voter turnout. The union says this shows firefighters are fed up with relentless pay cuts.
“Firefighters have faced a sustained attack on pay for more than a decade, with average pay falling by about £4,000 in real terms,” FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said.
“Our members face hazardous situations every day and sometimes risk their health to do the job. Now, faced with double-digit inflation and soaring energy bills, they are being told to accept even bigger real-terms pay cuts.”
10 Days to Avoid Strikes – Government on Notice
The union has given the government and fire service bosses a 10-day window to come up with a better pay offer to present to members. If not, strikes look all but certain.
Since 2010, real-term earnings for firefighters have dropped by 12%, and shockingly, one in five firefighter jobs have vanished over the same period. Firefighters already rejected a 5% pay rise below inflation last November.
Wrack blasted the government:
“People join the fire service because they want to help others and give back to their communities. But a government that refuses to listen has pushed us to the point of voting for strike action.”
Public Backs Firefighters Amid Health Risks
Polls reveal that around 60% of the public support firefighters taking strike action. The FBU also warned that recent research with the University of Central Lancashire found firefighters face a higher risk of cancer than the general public.
With a record number of billionaires in the UK and frontline workers struggling just to keep afloat, the battle over firefighter pay looks set to ignite major unrest.
