A fire crew from Newport scrambled to a suspected car fire just before 3pm on Wednesday. The call came from a lay-by near Lime Kiln Shute, where a Black Island-registered Ford Focus was seen billowing smoke.

Smoke Sparks Panic, Owner Evacuates

The worried driver spotted smoke pouring from under the bonnet and immediately dialled 999. She and her passenger fled the vehicle, even grabbing belongings and a car seat, fearing the car would explode into flames.

False Alarm – Overheated Engine to Blame

The fire crew arrived swiftly with small tools to inspect the vehicle. Fortunately, the problem was just an overheated engine — no fire found.

The Ford Focus was left with its owner to arrange recovery, ending a tense but luckily harmless roadside drama.
