Blaze Rips Through Beddington Bungalow – No Smoke Alarms Found!
Firefighters Battle Early Morning Inferno
Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters scrambled to a house fire on Crispin Close, Beddington, in the early hours of 18 April. Flames gutted most of the ground floor and part of the roof of a semi-detached bungalow.
Neighbours’ Homes Also at Risk
The fire didn’t stop there – a bit of the adjoining bungalow’s ground floor and roof was also damaged. One man was rescued from the neighbouring property after suffering smoke inhalation. Firefighters in breathing apparatus pulled him to safety before medics from the London Ambulance Service rushed him to hospital.
Deadly Warning: No Smoke Alarms Found
Shockingly, fire investigators discovered the affected bungalow had no working smoke alarms. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson issued a stark warning: “This incident is a timely reminder to ensure you have working smoke alarms. You should have working smoke alarms in every room where a fire can start, plus a heat alarm in the kitchen and the bathroom. They should be tested regularly.”
Rapid Response Saves Lives
The Brigade was called out at 3.01am and brought the fire under control by 4.16am. Crews from Wallington, Croydon, Norbury, and Mitcham fire stations worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and protect the community.
