Hero Drew Saves Man’s Life with On-the-Spot CPR
In a dramatic moment at a Billesley petrol station in November 2020, Drew sprang into action when he heard a woman screaming for help nearby.
Unconscious Man Hit by Car
West Midlands Fire Service Chief Fire Officer Phil Loach revealed the shocking scene. “It quickly became apparent that a road traffic collision had taken place where a man had been hit by a car and was unconscious with significant head injuries and not breathing.”
Drew’s Quick Thinking Brings Man Back
Firefighter Drew Ricketts immediately assessed the situation. While speaking to West Midlands Ambulance Service, he started CPR, assisted by others to stop bleeding and protect the man’s spine.
“Following CPR, the man regained consciousness,” said Chief Loach. Ambulance crews arrived just in time to take over, with Drew providing a vital handover and continuing to assist.
Family Praises Drew’s Life-Saving Act
The man’s family later contacted Drew to share the great news: their loved one is now out of hospital and steadily recovering.
They’ve nominated Drew for both a Pride of Britain Award and a Pride of Birmingham Award.
“I would like to congratulate and recognise FF Ricketts for his quick and decisive actions, calling on all his training, to assist and support in a challenging situation where a life was saved.” – Phil Loach, Chief Fire Officer
