Eastbourne RNLI Launches Dramatic New Year Rescue
The Eastbourne RNLI kicked off 2025 with a bang, answering a Mayday call just before midnight on January 4. A fishing vessel, 16 miles south of Eastbourne, was battling fierce 2-3 metre waves and relentless rain when crew reported a man overboard and engine trouble.
Rough Seas and Rain Fail to Stop Lifesaving Heroics
Solent Coastguard wasted no time paging the Eastbourne RNLI crew. The volunteer team launched their Trent Class All-Weather Lifeboat, Esme Anderson, from Sovereign Harbour. Despite brutal weather, the lifeboat sped to the scene, soon joined by the Solent Coastguard Rescue Helicopter.
Quick Thinking by Fishing Crew Averts Disaster
When rescue arrived, the fishing crew had already hauled their fallen comrade back onboard and were tackling the machinery issue themselves. After a quick chat with Coastguard, the lifeboat and chopper were stood down, letting the vessel press on safely.
RNLI Praise Teamwork and Readiness
The Eastbourne RNLI thanked the fishing crew for their swift action and applauded the combined efforts of the Coastguard and volunteers. This rescue underlines the vital work of RNLI crews who stand ready to brave any weather and save lives.
