Ford’s New BlueCruise Tech Promises “Hands-Off, Eyes-On” Driving
What is BlueCruise?
Ford’s BlueCruise technology takes driving a notch higher by controlling steering, acceleration, and braking — all while a camera watches your eyes to ensure you stay focused on the road. Don’t get fooled: this isn’t a fully self-driving car. It’s advanced assisted driving that demands you stay alert behind the wheel.
Only for 2023 Mustang Mach-E, Subscription-Based
Launching first on the electric Mustang Mach-E SUV 2023 models, BlueCruise comes with a trial 90-day free period. After that, drivers must pay monthly to keep the hands-free feature. It safely maintains distance from other cars and can even halt automatically in traffic jams, making those tailbacks slightly less painful.
Tech That Watches You Drive
The system relies on cameras and sensors to spot lane lines, speed limits, and other vehicles. While it can take over driving when conditions are safe, you must keep your eyes glued to the road — no phone scrolling or distractions allowed. Blink or close your eyes for too long, and BlueCruise will sound the alert, insisting you put hands back on the wheel.
Stay Responsible Behind the Wheel
Lisa Brankin, Ford UK & Ireland managing director, stressed: “Drivers remain fully responsible while using BlueCruise, including for any insurance claims in accidents. This is not autonomous driving — you are still in control.”
Transport Minister Jesse Norman added the tech “could significantly improve road safety by reducing driver errors.”
