Sad news from Hampshire as Dr John Knowles OBE, the founder of Marwell Wildlife, has passed away. He established Marwell in 1972 and dedicated decades to wildlife conservation.

A Marwell spokesperson said, “We are sorry to share the sad news of the passing of Dr John Knowles OBE, who founded Marwell in 1972. Many of our staff and volunteers knew or worked with John, and this news will be deeply felt by many.”

John Knowles revolutionised how zoos operate. His pioneering work in the 1970s reshaped conservation efforts and changed public perceptions. Thanks to his vision, Marwell became a beacon for animal breeding and conservation success.
