End of an Era for Portsmouth’s Beloved Model Shop

The iconic model shop on Fratton Road, a local favourite since 1957 formerly known as Fratton Bargain Shop, is set to close its doors. Brian and Ann Salt, the long-time owners, are retiring after decades of serving the community.

Retirement Brings Sad Farewell

Brian Salt took over the shop from his father in 1995 and has run it ever since. Despite their efforts, no new buyers came forward to take over the business. With heartfelt regret, Brian said, “I’m upset that the shop is closing, and regular customers are not going to have their source of supply for modelling materials.”

Hometown Hub Shuts After 65 Years

Known for being open seven days a week, the shop was a go-to spot for model enthusiasts seeking materials whenever they needed. Brian added, “It is a bit upsetting, but it’s time to go.” Though retired, Brian and Ann plan to attend trade shows around the country occasionally, keeping a toe in the hobby.

The community will now lose a treasured local landmark and a reliable source for model-making supplies that’s stood the test of time.
