Gas Leak Sparks Chaos in Bexleyheath
A major gas leak in Bexleyheath has forced emergency road closures and the evacuation of homes. The incident unfolded early this morning on Mayplace Road East, sparking panic and disruption for locals.
Homes Evacuated After Leak Detected
The dangerous gas leak was spotted at around 4.30am on December 17. Gas levels in two homes triggered an immediate evacuation as a safety precaution. Emergency teams and engineers rushed to the scene to contain the threat.
SGN, the gas distributor, quickly stepped in to provide alternative accommodation to those displaced. A spokesperson said:
“We responded to an emergency gas leak in Mayplace Road East, Bexleyheath, at 4.30am today. We’ve sourced alternative accommodation for the affected residents and will reoccupy them once it’s safe to do so. Our engineers have now located the source of the leak and are carrying out repairs to our gas main, while also ventilating the affected properties. The road remains closed to allow us to safely complete repairs.”
Road Closures and Bus Diversions Disrupt Travel
Mayplace Road East remains shut both ways between Barnehurst Road and Pinnacle Hill North while repairs are underway.
The closures have forced local bus routes to reroute:
- Route 99: Skips stops between Barnehurst Road and Randolph Road to Erith Road.
- Route 492: Also bypasses stops from Mayplace Road East and Barnehurst Road to Erith Road.
Commuters are urged to check live updates and expect delays on affected services.
Repairs Underway as Safety Remains Priority
SGN engineers have tracked down the source of the leak and are now working hard to fix the gas main and ventilate homes. The timeline for full repairs—and reopening the road—is still unknown.
Emergency services stress that public safety is their top priority, despite the significant disruption to daily life.
Community on Edge
The evacuation and traffic chaos have rattled residents and commuters alike. Authorities promise to keep the public updated as the situation develops and homes become safe for return.
