Passengers Locked Out as Dual Train Crashes Bring Network to Halt
Commuters faced a travel nightmare today after two serious train accidents slammed the Thameslink network. Since 11.44am on September 29, a key station has been closed as emergency services scramble to handle the chaos.
Two Separate Train Strikes Trigger Major Disruption
The drama kicked off at 9.13am when a person was hit by a train between Luton and St Albans City, shutting down all lines in the area. Initially, delays were expected to ease by 1pm, but now services could be disrupted until at least 3pm — with further delays looming.
Then, just before 11am, a second incident struck between Haywards Heath and Gatwick Airport, leaving Thameslink with no choice but to cancel all services until further notice. Passengers have been urged to avoid travel entirely.
“If your train has come to a stand in between stations, please remain on board and do not attempt to leave the train unless directed to by a member of staff. We know where you are and we are working to get you on the move again shortly.” – Thameslink
London Commuters Suffer Network-Wide Meltdown
Though both crashes happened outside London, the ripple effects are hammering anyone trying to get in or out of the capital. East Midlands Railway has suspended all services between Luton and London St Pancras International, while the Corby to London St Pancras Connect route is also down.
Southern, Great Western Railway, and Gatwick Express are all tangled in delays and cancellations. National Rail warns those travelling through the affected zones could face delays of up to an hour or outright cancellations while emergency crews tackle the scenes.
