Gatwick’s Northern Runway Plan Clears Major Hurdle
London Gatwick Airport’s bid to activate its Northern Runway alongside the Main Runway has passed a crucial government checkpoint. The Planning Inspectorate (PINS) announced the proposal will now proceed to a full examination.
Big Plans to Boost Flight Capacity
The Development Consent Order (DCO), first unveiled on 6th July, aims to maximise Gatwick’s existing infrastructure. The airport wants to increase flight capacity and improve resilience, in line with government policy.
Public Consultations and Rigorous Scrutiny Ahead
- PINS reviewed Gatwick’s consultation efforts and found them satisfactory.
- Two public consultations were held—in autumn 2021 and summer 2022—focusing heavily on road changes around the airport.
- The next phase, lasting up to 18 months, includes a six-month examination with written submissions and public hearings.
Residents Get Their Say
The public, local communities, and stakeholders can register as ‘interested parties’ with PINS to voice their opinions during this stage. Gatwick Airport will soon share details on how to sign up and engage with the process.
Tim Norwood, Chief Planning Officer at Gatwick: “We’re pleased PINS has accepted our application. We’ll keep everyone updated on how to take part in the next phase.”
