Gatwick Reveals Changes to Northern Runway Plans
London Gatwick Airport is pushing forward with its Northern Runway project but with a green twist. After submitting its initial plans, the airport has announced three key tweaks designed to cut environmental impact and boost design flexibility.
Public Consultation Kicks Off December 13
The airport is now calling for public input. From December 13, 2023, until 11:59pm on January 21, 2024, everyone – from local residents to landowners and stakeholders – can have their say on the revised plans. Details and how to participate are available on Gatwick’s website.
What’s Changing?
- Expanded design parameters for the North Terminal International Departure Lounge’s southern extension
- Downsized and repurposed Central Area 1 Enclosure (CARE) facility
- Revised Surface Water Treatment Works system
Big Economic Boost on the Horizon
Backed by the Planning Inspectorate since August 3, 2023, the Northern Runway isn’t just about infrastructure. It promises around 14,000 new jobs and could pump £1 billion annually into the regional economy through tourism, trade, and business growth.
Tim Norwood, Chief Planning Officer at Gatwick, said: “Our engagement with the public and stakeholders to date has been invaluable in helping us shape our Northern Runway plans. However, since the submission of our DCO application, we have identified a number of small improvements we would like to make to our proposal. We are therefore asking for views on three discrete changes to our plans and would welcome any feedback people may want to make.”
