£2 Bus Ticket Fare Cap Extended Across England
Good news for bus travellers! The government has extended its popular £2 single bus ticket offer on over 5,000 routes across England (outside London) until 31 October 2023. This move slashes average ticket prices by a third, helping millions save cash while getting around.
Big Savings on Daily Journeys and Summer Trips
- £2 single tickets continue to make travel affordable and encourage bus use
- Offer runs on 5,000+ routes until the end of October 2023
- Fare cap rises slightly to £2.50 from November 2023 but stays in place for a full year
The extended ‘Get Around for £2’ scheme supports everyday commuters, people visiting loved ones, those going to medical appointments, and holidaymakers on a budget. It’s part of the government’s £200 million plan to ease the cost-of-living squeeze and boost the economy.
Massive Discounts on Long-Distance Routes
From coastal jaunts on the 12 Coaster (Brighton to Eastbourne) to scenic trips in the Lake District (Bowness to Grasmere), the £2 cap slashes fares, making summer breaks cheaper and greener.

Industry and Officials Praise the Extension
“For the past 6 months, people across England have made the most of £2 bus tickets, which is one of the key ways we’re supporting households with the cost of living,” said Transport Secretary Mark Harper.
“Now we’ve extended the £2 fare cap, people can continue to ‘Get Around for £2’ throughout the summer – taking advantage of the bus for affordable holiday trips, to get to work, access medical appointments, and see loved ones.”
Martin Dean, Managing Director for UK Regional Bus at Go-Ahead Group, added: “We welcome the extension of the £2 fare cap and we’re pleased to be working with the Department for Transport to continue to make buses as affordable as possible. The £2 fare cap encourages people out of their cars and onto public transport.”
Norman Baker from Campaign for Better Transport said: “Buses are integral to the economy and keep the country moving by reducing congestion and connecting communities. The extension of the single bus fare cap is a very welcome move that will save passengers money and encourage more people to get on board this summer.”
Future Funding and Green Goals
The fare cap extension is backed by a £200 million government fund, added to a £300 million investment protecting routes and improving services up to 2025. This forms part of a record £3.5 billion boost to buses since 2020.
The government also aims for a net zero-emission bus fleet, supporting over 3,400 zero-emission buses (ZEBs) in the UK, including £300 million towards 1,400 ZEBs outside London.
Graham Vidler, Chief Executive of the Confederation of Passenger Transport, said: “Our members will be working hard to ensure people across the country can get out and about for just £2 wherever they’re heading this summer.”
Passengers can check updated routes and details on the official government website or on Traveline when planning their journeys.
