Greater Manchester Police Suspend Eight Officers Over Racism Claims
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has suspended eight officers and slapped restricted duties on one more after serious allegations of racial discrimination. This latest shake-up follows a previous suspension of five officers and restrictions on two others from the Bury district back in July 2024.
Suspensions Hit Bury and Rochdale Officers
Seven officers from Bury and one from Rochdale—who was attached to Bury when the allegations emerged—are now out of action. To keep things calm and avoid service disruptions, GMP has sent extra officers to Bury on a temporary basis.
Independent Inquiry Underway
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating these troubling claims. They are probing the initial complaint while another related case has been handed back to GMP for further investigation.
Senior Cop Speaks Out
Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Allen, head of GMP’s Professional Standards Directorate, said: “The reports we have received are deeply concerning. I want to reassure the Bury community, the wider public, and GMP staff that we are conducting a full and thorough investigation.”
This ongoing scandal highlights GMP’s struggle to clean up internal problems and rebuild public trust amid serious charges of racism.
