Chaos in Greece as Wildfires Force Mass Evacuations in Corfu and Rhodes

Emergency Evacuation Orders in Corfu

Greece’s Emergency Communications Service has swung into action, ordering urgent evacuations across multiple areas in Corfu and Rhodes. Blazing wildfires have plunged these popular holiday hotspots into chaos, sparking panic among locals and tourists alike.

In Corfu, residents and visitors in Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia Perithia, and Sinies have been told to flee immediately to safety in Kasiopi. With temperatures scorching at a fierce 40°C, staying outdoors is almost impossible, making the fire threat even deadlier.

Rhodes Faces Largest Wildfire Evacuation in Greek History

The crisis in Rhodes is even worse. A staggering 19,000 people have been forced to abandon the island – the largest wildfire evacuation ever recorded in Greece, according to the Ministry of Climate Change and Civil Protection. Most were evacuated by road, while 3,000 were ferried away by sea.

Holidaymakers’ summer plans are shattered as Jet2 and TUI cancel all flights to Rhodes amid the chaos. Power cuts have added to the turmoil, leaving travel agencies unable to update stranded tourists.

No Casualties But Health Risks Loom

Thankfully, there have been no deaths directly linked to the wildfires. However, six people were briefly hospitalised with respiratory issues, likely caused by the thick smoke and ash choking the air.

Authorities Brace for More Evacuations

Greek officials are battling tirelessly to contain the blazing infernos. But with conditions so volatile, more evacuation orders could be on the horizon to keep residents and visitors safe.
