Fertility Clinics Set to Reopen After COVID-19 Freeze
Fertility treatments on hold due to the coronavirus crisis are now back on track. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has lifted its ban on fertility services, allowing UK clinics to apply to reopen from Monday 11 May—provided they meet strict safety rules.
New Safety Rules to Protect Patients and Staff
Both private and NHS fertility clinics must submit detailed plans proving they can safely provide treatment amid the ongoing pandemic. Social distancing will be mandatory in waiting areas. Many appointments may switch to phone consultations. Clinics will also supply personal protective equipment (PPE) where needed to keep everyone safe.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “Now that we are past the peak, I am delighted to announce the restoration of fertility services. People relying on fertility treatment have been worried not knowing when they could continue their journey to start a family. We wanted to open these clinics as soon as it was safe to do so, and our strict guidelines will ensure staff and patients remain safe as we continue to tackle this virus.”
Support and Fair Access Promised for Patients
Sally Cheshire, Chair of the HFEA, praised the decision: “Our priority has been to resume treatment quickly and safely for as many patients as possible. The closure has been distressing, so this is great news for those eager to start a family.”
Private clinics might reopen swiftly, but NHS clinics could take longer due to staff redeployments. To ensure fairness, Matt Hancock will instruct clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) to confirm readiness and guarantee all fertility patients receive equal treatment without extra delays.
Additional Support Measures Announced
The government recently agreed to extend storage times by two years for frozen eggs, sperm, and embryos, easing pressure on fertility patients during the pandemic.
Geeta Nargund, Lead Consultant for Reproductive Medicine at St George’s Hospital NHS Trust said: “We are delighted that IVF services are opening soon. We thank the government for recognising the distress faced by thousands of women and couples and acting swiftly. We must ensure effective social distancing and safety measures are put in place.”
Fertility hopefuls can now look forward to safely resuming their treatment journeys as clinics prepare to reopen under the watchful eye of the HFEA and NHS England.
