Heathrow Airport Shuts Down After Massive Fire Sparks Travel Chaos

Heathrow Airport has ground to a halt for the entire day after a huge fire tore through a nearby electrical substation. The blaze triggered a major power outage, wreaking havoc not only across West London but causing global travel disruption.

More Than 1,300 Flights Cancelled or Diverted

The crisis, announced late Thursday night, has hit over 1,300 flights. Passengers were urgently told not to travel to Heathrow under any circumstances. Terminals went dark, cutting power to Terminal 2 and other key airport areas.

Flight tracking site FlightRadar24 revealed that 120 planes were already airborne when Heathrow closed unexpectedly. Many flights were diverted to Gatwick, Paris’s Charles de Gaulle, and Shannon Airport in Ireland. Others were outright cancelled.

Heathrow, the UK’s busiest airport serving almost 84 million passengers annually, is bracing for ongoing disruption that could ripple through global aviation networks.

Fire Rages at North Hyde Electrical Substation

The fire broke out at the North Hyde substation in Hayes just after 11.20pm on Thursday, knocking out electricity to the airport and causing blackouts across Hayes, Hounslow, and nearby areas. Over 16,300 homes are affected.

“Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage due to a large fire at a nearby electrical substation,” said a Heathrow spokesperson. “For the safety of our passengers and staff, the airport will remain closed until 11.59pm on 21 March 2025.”

Emergency Crews Battle Blaze as Hundreds Evacuate

The London Fire Brigade rushed 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters to tackle the inferno on Nestles Avenue in Hayes. A 200-metre safety cordon was set up, and around 150 nearby residents were evacuated.

Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: “This is a highly visible and serious incident. Our firefighters are battling challenging conditions to bring the fire under control as swiftly as possible.”

The cause of the fire remains a mystery. Crews are expected to stay on site overnight and through the weekend.

Power Outages Hit Thousands as Services Respond

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks confirmed that more than 16,300 properties remain without power. A National Grid spokesperson added:

“The fire damaged critical equipment. Engineers are working urgently to restore power as quickly as possible.”

Residents and businesses have been told to keep windows and doors shut due to heavy smoke. London Ambulance Service and Metropolitan Police are on the scene to assist.

Passenger Warning: Stay Away from Heathrow

  • Do not travel to Heathrow Airport.
  • Check with your airline for flight rebooking or diversion details.
  • Monitor Heathrow’s official website and social media for updates.
  • Use alternative transport where possible.

This is a developing story. Authorities warn travel chaos could drag on into the weekend as power is gradually restored and airport operations resume.
