Devastating Blaze Rips Through Essex Homes
A huge fire tore through Jaywick, near Clacton-on-Sea in Essex, today, seriously damaging up to ten properties. The inferno broke out at around 11am, sparking urgent warnings for locals to steer clear. Essex Fire and Rescue scrambled six fire crews at the height of the blaze to battle the roaring flames.
Terrified Resident Describes Horrific Scene
One shaken resident revealed her nightmare: “I woke up and my house was on fire. I saw smoke in the front room, and my partner smelled something burning. The house opposite, which is empty since the owner recently passed away, was also ablaze. Rubbish in the front garden caught fire — the neighbour had a bin fire, and the wind sent some ashes flying, which sparked the rubbish and made the fire spread.”
Another local added: “I was one of the first to call the fire service. At first, it looked like a small bonfire, but with the wind, it quickly got out of control. I rang at about 10:59am, and the first fire engine arrived ten minutes later.”
Smoke Blankets Coastal Homes — Rest Centre Opened
Thick black smoke engulfed bungalows along Beach Way, sending plumes into the air near the coast. Tendring District Council has set up a rest centre at The Sun Spot in Clacton to support displaced residents.
Nearby residents have been advised to keep doors and windows shut to avoid inhaling smoke. There are also fears that animals may be trapped inside the affected properties.
Fire Now Under Control but Cleanup to Take Hours
Despite the intense blaze, crews have brought the fire under control. Station Manager Nick Singleton said: “Please avoid the area while we deal with this incident; a lot of smoke is being blown around in the wind. We have the fire under control but expect to be on-site for several hours working to fully extinguish it. Initial crews worked tirelessly in windy conditions to stop the fire from spreading.”
Authorities are investigating the fire’s cause. The public is urged to stay clear to allow emergency services to work safely.
