Ilford Hindu Community Centre Ravaged by Devastating Blaze – Six Fire Engines Fight Flames, Roads Shut

A fierce fire has ripped through Ilford’s Shree Sorathia Prajapati Community Centre, leaving the building heavily damaged and local roads closed. The blaze erupted on Cleveland Road around 8pm, sparking a huge emergency response.

Firefighters Battle Intense Flames

The single-storey community centre was found completely engulfed when firefighters arrived. London Fire Brigade sent six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Ilford, Barking, Stratford, Leyton, Hainault, and Romford. A 32-metre turntable ladder from Dagenham was used to douse the flames from above.

After intense efforts, crews brought the inferno under control by 9.21pm. Miraculously, no injuries were reported.

Major Disruption as Roads Closed

Redbridge Council confirmed significant traffic chaos, with Cleveland Road and Albert Road shut, and heavy delays near Ilford Lane and Sunnyside Road. Residents were warned to keep doors and windows shut to avoid drifting smoke.

Police Investigate but No Suspicion of Arson

The fire was first spotted by Metropolitan Police neighbourhood officers on patrol. Police are now investigating the cause but say early signs do not suggest the fire was started deliberately.

Damage Assessment Underway

The London Fire Brigade cautions that the community centre has suffered substantial structural damage. A full examination of the scene is ongoing to understand the extent of the destruction.
